Ensuring Your Garden Is Winter Ready

As always, summer seems to have come and gone in the blink of an eye. Days in the sun and evenings around a BBQ are well behind us and, as leaves begin to fall, we’re all preparing to transition into the cosier seasons. Of course, warm coats, woolly hats and hot drinks are all essential, but there’s more to consider than festive outfits and pumpkin spice hot chocolate.

When it comes to our homes, many of us will be battening down the hatches and doing our best to keep the heat in, but what about our outdoor areas? Gardens are often overlooked in our preparations for colder months, while furniture, tools and equipment are often left to the mercy of the elements.

However, with a little forethought and preparation, preparing for winter is not only simple but also enjoyable.

Here at Timclad Ltd (York Timber), we’ve put together a quick guide to ensuring your garden is ready for winter.

Read on to hear our tips.

Clean & Tidy

First on our list is a little bit of garden maintenance. As the weather turns and the temperature drops, the prospect of going outdoors and tidying your garden space will become less and less appealing, so it’s important to get it done early. Simple things such as trimming hedges and decluttering forgotten corners will keep your garden looking well-kept until spring.

Buying a high-quality shed to protect and house tools and outdoor items such as bikes and garden furniture is also a good idea. This will prevent damage or rust and keep BBQs and parasols in great condition for next summer.

Weatherproofing

In addition to tidying and housekeeping duties in the garden, it is a good idea to re-apply weather-proofing paints and oils to timber. Sheds and decking will benefit greatly from a fresh coat of protection, helping them fight off rot, mould, rust and degradation.

Alternatively, opting for tanalised garden buildings upon purchase is a great way of ensuring they are tough enough to withstand even the harshest of winter conditions.

Decorations

Of course, preparing for the colder months need not be entirely focused on practicality, and a little creative flare can breathe life into an otherwise gloomy garden. Adding decorative elements such as lighting and ornaments is an exciting and effective way to create a beautiful space, bringing you and your family a little joy on colder days.

Of course, how you decorate your garden is entirely up to you. From fairy lights and windchimes to Christmas figurines or a winter wonderland, it’s all part of the fun. For those with younger children, picking out decorations and making an afternoon of decorating is a lovely tradition and provides hours of entertainment and family time.
